Frances Karttunen:

HU(I) suppletive verb with YĀ to go / ir (K) In view of HUĪLOHUA, and possibly of HUĪCA, HUĪTZ, and HUĪCATZ, a case might be made for basic HUĪ, but the I is short in the imperfect and optative, and it /K87/ disappears in the construction YĀ-HU(I) > YAUH. Only short vowels are susceptible to such deletion, but there is clearly irregularity in the whole suppletive relationship of YĀ and HU(I). See YĀ.
